Cheap Shot

Usually, I’ll reach some tipping point in a song’s construction that It Is What It Is. At which point I dial in the mix, maybe make some tweaks to the arrangement, master it, and cut it loose.

Which is what happened to this one.  Only it was called “Dirty Words” and it had completely different lyrics.  Here’s the song cover:

I loved the arrangement and main riff – a funky upbeat ass-moving thing.  But the more I thought about it, the less I liked the lyrics.  They were OK, but…

Something’s happened to me since Stepped In Gum made it as the KUTX Song of the Day. I like to think that I’ve upped my game – which may be true – but the takeaway is that I’ve become more meticulous and am more likely to throw away stuff and start over.  So for Dirty Words, I went back to the drawing board for something pithier, less preachy, and more…  Well, me.  That said, though I like these lyrics better, I was still tempted to throw these away and go again.

But enough is enough – Chances are slim that this song is a Grammy award winner, no matter how many times I re-write these lyrics.  So allow me to present Cheap Shot, dropping New Year’s Day 2025:

Presave if you’re into that.
